John is known for fearlessly asking the hard questions and offering firm but fair analysis of the issues. His show was named the best breakfast show in South Africa at the MTN Radio Awards and he has received numerous nominations and awards in his personal capacity for his work in the media and for using his platform to raise awareness of problems and find solutions.
John is an Irishman who has lived in South Africa for over 30 years and calls Johannesburg home. A former British Lions rugby player, John’s roots in sport have led him to sports commentary and analysis both on TV and in a weekly column he writes for the Saturday Star. A veteran broadcaster, John has been with 702 since the station launched in the early 1980’s. He has been in his current role as breakfast show host for 10 years.
John is a Laureus Ambassador, and volunteers his time to support their Sport for Good projects which use sport as a tool to bring about social change.
He is also passionate about rhino conservation and was recently nominated for the inaugural Rhino Conservation Awards.
